Johan Christian Tanck married Martha Minchen on 19 Jan, 1866 at Port Chalmers in Otago, New Zealand. His profession is listed as Chief Officer of the Brig Julia Port Chalmers. He was 28 years old.
Johan was the father of Australian Prime Minister Chris Watson.
John Christian (Chris) Watson was born on 9 April 1867 at Valparaiso, Chile, son of Johan Christian Tanck and his wife Martha, née Minchin (or Skinner). Tanck was chief officer of the brig Julia which had arrived at Port Chalmers, New Zealand, from Talcahuano, Chile, on 24 December 1865; he married Martha at Port Chalmers on 19 January 1866; they departed in the Julia for Guam on 2 February.
Some sources suggest he was a Chilean of German descent, but it is also possible he was a German working out of Chile.
Other sources suggest he was Australian, and that Watson was born while his ship was in port in Valparaiso.[1]
