Waddy Tate, Sr was born in 1786 in Virginia. Waddy Jr. predeceased his father in 1865, in Mississippi, leaving several surviving children. By that point, Waddy Senior (who died circa 1870), along with 3 of Waddy Jr's brothers (Fred, William and Phocian), had migrated to Texas (in 1851), where they established landholdings and a plantation along the Colorado river. All three of the brothers served (briefly) as officers in the Texas Ninth Infantry (Confederate) or Eighth Cavalry, although no records of any serving in combat have been found.
