Biography

Joseph Teasdale was born in County Durham, England.

Joseph Teasdale was born in Brancepeth, Durham, about 1850 and was the second son of Joseph Teasdale and Elizabeth Crozier.^[1]

On the 1851 census, Joseph, aged 1 year, is living at Peases West, Crook and Billy Row, with his parents and older brother, John, aged 3 years. His father is working as an engine worker.^[2] Joseph's two siblings, Jonathan and Hannah, both died in 1857 and his mother died in 1860. Joseph's father married Sarah Manners just a few months later.

On the 1861 census, Joseph, aged 11 years, is living at 9 Paddy's Row in Auckland, with his father and stepmother. He is employed as a labourer at the colliery.^[3]

Joseph married Margaret Charlton Young in 1872 and they had five children.^[4]

On the 1881 census, Joseph, an ironworks puddler, and Margaret are living at 2 Queen St, Thornaby, with thier daughter, Ada, aged 3 years, and Margaret's widowed father. An ironworks puddler converts pig iron into wrought iron with the use of a reverberatory furnace.^[5]

On the 1891 census, Joseph, an iron worker, and Margaret are living at 12 Wellington St, Thornaby, with their children: Ada (13 years) and Eleanor (7 weeks). They also have 3 boarders, including John McLeod, aged 5 years, who they will eventually adopt.^[6]

On the 1901 census, Joseph, an iron worker, and Margaret are living at 10 Stoker St, Stockton, with their youngest daughter, Eleanor, aged 10 years. They also have an adopted son, John McLeod, aged 17 years, living with them, as well as two lodgers.^[7]

Joseph Teasdale died, aged 78 years, in 1928.^[8]
