Biography

When Joseph was born in 1899 to Emmanuel Teilhard de Chardin and Berthe-Adele de Pompierre d'Hornoy, his father was 55 years old and his mother was 46 and he had five older brothers and three sisters another sister, Mariel, had died at age 3 years. Later, two more brothers were born. Joseph married Antoinette Louise Caroline Levert in Paris 27 December 1918.

By 1942 both parents had died and Pierre was the only other surviving sibling. In summer - August 1948, 1949 and 1950 - Pierre , unwell and frail, stayed with his brother, in his home Le Chateau des Moulins, Newville, Puy de Dome, to rest and make his annual retreat there. He sat in the garden, strolled down the avenues and observed the vineyards. It was there that he wrote "How I see" in 1948 and "The Heart of Matter" in 1950. Joseph outlived all the family and died at age 88 years in Paris, 1978, 23 years after Teilhard.
