Matthias enlisted September 1, 1861 at Indianapolis, Indiana, and was mustered in on the 12th as a corporal in Company H, 27th Indiana Infantry. He was mustered out in Georgia on September 1, 1864 (location only says Chattahoochee River in Georgia).[2]
