Biography

August Texter was born on Thursday, November 4, 1852 in Genoa, Ottawa County, Ohio. His parents were David P. Texter (June 1828 - Wednesday, March 10, 1909) and Pauline Mary Fausnacht Texter (Sunday, July 9, 1826 - Saturday, December 13, 1902). His parents were married on Thursday, September 14, 1848, in Stark County, Ohio. His father enlisted in the Ohio 3rd Light Artillery Battery on Saturday, January 2, 1864. He served as a private until he mustered out on Thursday, July 21, 1864, in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. His left hand was wounded in action.

On Tuesday, June 18, 1878 August married Mary P. Schauer (Friday, May 28,1858 - Friday, September 7, 1928) in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. They had six children: Bertha Mary Texter Bast (Thursday, January 16, 1879 - Friday, July 28, 1933), Mary "Mayme" C. Texter Remmels (Friday, March 12, 1880 - Tuesday, February 27, 1973), Josephine M. Texter Long (Sunday, October 25, 1891 - Wednesday, June 19, 1957), Hazel Agnes Texter Lotz Hagey (Saturday, February 24, 1894 - Friday, April 18, 1980), Howard Augustus Texter (Thursday, June 1, 1899 - Thursday, April 14, 1983), Harriet Electa Texter McMaster (Sunday, February 14, 1902 - Monday, September 26, 1994).

On Monday, December 8, 1890, August was elected warden for the North Star Council No. 18 Royal Arcanum in Canton, Ohio. On Monday, December 10, 1894, he was elected vice regent. On Tuesday, March 25, 1896, August was selected to be on the board of directors for the fledgling Republican Party in Canton's Fifth Ward. At its Monday, May 13, 1901, the Canton school board approved paying August $4.75 for carpenter work.

The Canton Repository, Tuesday, November 8, 1910, page 7 - - - CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY In honor of the fifty-eighth anniversary of August Texter, 1204 Housel street, a number of his friends gathered at his home and reminded him of the occasion. Cards, vocal and instrumental music were features of entertainment during the evening. Mr. Texter received a number of birthday gifts. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schauer, Mr. and Mrs. George Remmels, Paul Brauchler, Miss Josephine Texter, Mr. and Mrs. George Schauer, Miss Hazel Texter, Harriet and Howard Texter and Mr. and Mrs. August Texter.

August was a carpenter by trade. He passed away from blood poisoning sixteen months after he fell on two rusty nails in an upturned board. It was reported that he was at his work. assisting in crating freight, when he fell on the board, the nails penetrating his right hand. His death occurred on Sunday, December 12, 1915, in Canton. Services were held Wednesday, December 15, 1915, at St. Mary's Church. Burial was at St. Peter's Cemetery. He is interred beside his wife, Mary.
