Biography

Hermina Thijssen was born on June 5, 1817 in Brabant. Her parents were Theodorus Thijssen and Johanna Jansen.[1] Surname sometimes appears to spelled Thyssen. Her marriage certificate in 1844 listed her occupation as seamstress.[2]

Emigration to the United States was proably in 1849. Herman filed intent to emigrate in May 1849 and Henry was born in WI in Nov 1849.

1850 Census shows her as age 34, (listed as "Armenia") living in De Pere with her husband Herman, age 34, sons Jacob, age 11 (listed as "Cobus", probably a mispelling of Jacobus) and Andrew, 8 months (who's age matches the second child named Henry). It appears that the first child named Henry and the daughter Theodora died prior to that census. They were living in the same dwelling as the family of Theodore Coonen (listed as Doras Coonen on the form).

1860 Census Hermanus Jacobs may have been miswritten as Jacob Munsen, living in Scott. Brown Co, WI. Ages and names for all household members are a match. She is listed as Mina, age 44. The rest of the household includes her husband Herman (listed as Jacob) is shown as age 44, ; children Jacob age 20; Henry age 10; Theodore age 8, Albert age 6; Mary (Wilhelmina) age 4; and John age 3. Nellie is not listed, although she should have been about 5 months old on that census date.

1870 Federal Census shows her as age 54, living in Scott, Brown Co, WI (Post Office is Bay Settlement) with her husband Herman, sons Henry, Theodore, Albert & John, and daughters Mena (Minnie) & Nellie. Name is mispelled as Ermina.

1880 Census shows her as age 63 living in Scott, Brown Co, WI with her husband Herman, son John, daughter Ellen (Petronella), and granddaughters Harriet & Anna. It appears these were the children of Jacob & Katherine, probably living with them after Katherine's death in 1877.[3]
