Biography

Henry was born about 1852.

He married Ann Lucas in 1876.[1]

He married 2nd Elizabeth Botham in 1885.[2]

He had a dairy farm of 209 acres one mile from Rongotea township

On Tuesday evening last a pleasant little social was held in the Rongotea Primitive Methodist Church to bid goodbye to Mr H. P. Thompson, woh, for many years, has acted as treasurer for the trustees. For some time Mr Thompson has contemplated a trip to the Old Country, so on the eve of his departure his many friends came together to have a little chat and to wish him farewell. His cotrustees took the opportunity of showing their esteem for his regularity and devotion to duty by presenting him with a handsomely bound copy of the Bagster Bible. On behalf of the trustees the Rev P. W. Jones made the presentation and voiced their kindly feeling and good wishes in a few words, after which Mr Thompson feelingly and suitably replied. The meeting closed by singing : God be with you till we meet again." Mr Thompson left by Wednesday evening's train for his long-cherished trip, and we hope for his safe return after a pleasant tour.[3]

He passed away in 1902[4][5] and was buried in Rongotea Cemetery, Manawatu District, New Zealand.[5]

Yesterday morning we regret to announce, Mr H. P. Thompson, of Rongotea, was found dead in the Square. It appears that in the evening he rode to the Post Office for his mail, and whilst there his horse got away. He started to find it, and all that is known is that his wife not finding him early in the morning, started with others to search for him, and found him lying on the side of the road with a box of matches in his hand and a burnt match in the other hand. It is supposed death arose from heart disease.[6]

An inquest on the body of Henry Palmer Thompson was held at Rongotea on Saturday. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, " That the said Henry Palmer Thompson met his death from natural causes, viz, heart disease." [7]
