Adeline was born about 1884 in Urbana, Ohio.

She was the daughter of Amanda Smith and Civil War veteran Jeremiah Thompson of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color.
