James Granville Thurston was born on Jul 24, 1846 in Mount Desert, Hancock, Maine, United States, son of James Robbins Thurston (1822–1901) and Eliza Ann Benson (1824–1857).

James married Matilda Jane Norwood on Jan 10, 1875.

James died on Mar 31, 1879, aged 32. He was buried in Benson Cemetery, Bernard, Hancock County, Maine.
