Biography

Note: Obituary...Deer River News, 20 Aug 1931. **Sewell Tibbetts accident Victim Popular Resort Owner Killed Saturday Night When Car Crashed Into Tree** Sewell S. Tibbetts, proprietor of Sewell’s Camp at Winnibigoshish Dam, was instantly killed about seven o’clock last Saturday evening when his auto jumped the highway on Itasca D a short distance west of the old Kistermacher farm and crashed into a tree. Mr. Tibbetts and Wm. Erickson were enroute from Deer River to the resort when the accident happened. The car slipped off the grade, two wheels following the ditch for a distance of about 100 feet, struck a block of wood and somersaulted. It is believed Mr. Tibbetts was thrown against a tree, for his body was found near one, with the skull fractured. Elmer Johnson, Earl Godfrey and a tourist from South Dakota reached the scene a few moments after the accident and just before Mr. Tibbetts expired. Johnson hurried to Deer River for a physician, but before he returned Mr. Tibbetts was dead. Erickson was no where to be seen when the accident was discovered. Late Saturday night he appeared at the home of friends, but had only a hazy remembrance of what had happened. It is supposed Mr. Erickson was stunned when the car crashed, and wandered away in a daze. He was not seriously injured. Sewell Tibbetts was born at Aitkin, MN Jan 12 1876. He grew to manhood there, coming into this region about 35 years ago. He lived some years at Bena, later operating a small resort on Cass River. For about four years he was employed in the national forest service. About 15 years ago, he opened a summer resort at Winnibigoshish dam, where his home has since been. Mr. Tibbetts was a friendly man, in all the term could mean. His greeting and handclasp were always cordial. Adversity did not ruffle him. His resort was popular. Hundreds of friends mourn his passing. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Dan Smith of Yachats (Yahats), Oregon, and two brothers, Wm. Tibbetts of Ball Club, and Eben tibbetts of Albany, Oregon.
