Harriet Tiedemann was born on June 18, 1878, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Mary E. Burns, age 34, and Frederick Tiedemann, age 38.

She married Carl Lincoln Schurz on October 20, 1897, in Monsey, New York. They had one child who died as an infant.

She died on December 5, 1921, in Manhattan, New York, at the age of 43, and was buried in her hometown in the Laurel Hill Cemetery.
