Biography

The daughter of William Tillyer and Mary (Smalley) Tillyer, Martha was born in the village of Sheldrake in 1874.^{[citation needed]} Her family lived at her grandparents' farm in Ovid, New York, which her father eventually took over.^[1][2] Martha married William Burton Helfman (1875-1918), the son of Georg Wilhelm Helfman and Elizabeth Flickinger, marrying in Sheldrake, New York on December 22, 1903,^[3] seven months after the death of her father, whose land she inherited; her mother had passed away in 1900.^[4] Martha and William had two children together:

1. George William Helfman (1908-1962)
2. Barbara Frances Helfman (1913-2007)

They made their home in Ovid.^[5][6][7] Her husband passed away in 1918 and Martha raised her two children in Covert, New York.^[8][9]

By 1930, they lived in Ithaca, New York where, at age 21, her son worked as a timekeeper at a typewriter works and her daughter, age 17, worked as a waitress in a cafeteria.^[10] After her children grew up and moved out, Martha returned to Covert, residing in the village of Interlaken.^[11] She passed away there at the age of 70^[12] and is buried at Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken, New York.^[13]
