Istvan was born about 1891. He passed away in 1971. Steven (Istvan) emigrated in May of 1911. He left Hamburg aboard the "Graf Waldersee" and landed at Philadelphia. The passenger list indicates that he was 18 years of age, he was alone, and he was from Bes (Hungary), and headed for Congo, Perry, Ohio. His father's name was Janos Titko. In Congo he would join his older brother Andros.
In 1920 Steve is a coal miner, and in 1940 a landscape foreman.
Research
Bes (on Steve's passenger papers) is now a small area south east of Trebisov in the eastern part of Slovakia. His parents are named on his marriage record as John and Lizzie (Kalan) Titko. These parents are also listed on Andrew Titko's marriage record in Sep 1911. I found a record for Janos Titka and Erzsebet (Elizabeth) Kalan on the baptismal records of two daughters in the 1870's in church records for the above area. Besa matches the name Bes on the passenger list - even though the countries have changed boundaries since 1911. Also the name Janos Titka and Erzsebet Kalan closely match John Titko and Lizzie Kalan, so I think it fair to conclude that Steve and Andrew were form what is now Besa, Velke Kapusany, Slovakia on the church records near Trebisov and that they were the children of Janos Titka and Erzsebet Kalan (who were likely born in the 1850's). Related families have since been found on church records. Catlin Black
