John Tom was born on April 28, 1820 in Blisland, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, son of William Edwin Tom (1791–1883) and Anne Lane (1796–1870).^[1]

John married Ann Elder (born on June 27, 1821 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia; daughter of James Elder and Mary Smith).^[2] Their children were:
