Samuel married Lydia Thurston. Samuel was a Revolutionary War veteran. [1]
They had a daughter, Mary, who died at 10 years of age. Samuel and Mary are both buried in Prudence Island Cemetery, Providence, Rhode Island. [2] [3]
Samuel was periferally involved in the Gaspee Affair. When the English schooner Gaspee was run aground and subsequently burned by Rhode Island colonialists in June of 1772, one of Samuel Tompkins' indentured servants, a black/Indian man named Aaron Biggs, claimed to have a part in the affair. The investigation proved that he was lying. Testimony from Samuel Tompkins and two of his other indentured servants swore that Biggs was at home the night of the incident. [4]
