Following the service, family will receive guests at Westin City Center Hotel, 650 North Pearl Street in the 650 North Restaurant. Private burial to be held in Waco. John Walter Torbett III, "Johnny," was born in Marlin, Texas, to the late Dr. John Walter Torbett, Jr. and Virginia Park Potts Torbett. John was the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. (Nannie King) John Walter Torbett, Sr. of Marlin, and the Honorable and Mrs. (Virginia Donnell) M.C. Houston Park, of Waco. Johnny, an accomplished musician, mathematician, sports enthusiast and seeker of all things trivia, was impassioned by education and music.

He attended preparatory school at The Hill School in Pottstown, Penn., then attended Southern Methodist University, earning two Bachelor degrees and one Master's. A loyal member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, Johnny played his precious trumpet in the band "Cell Block Seven," was cheer/choir leader and high-diver. Additionally, he attended North Texas State University earning a Ph.D. in music. Johnny had a career teaching math, science and choir in the Dallas Metropolis.

When called to duty, he served his country musically in the U.S. Army Band which achieved highest awards. As well as singing seven languages in many operas, becoming a master bridge player, a member of Mensa and an avid jazz aficionado, Johnny left his mark and touched others in unexplainable ways.

Johnny was preceded in death by his son, John Walter Torbett, IV "Walt"; and his brother, Donnell Park Torbett. He is survived by his son, Russell Park Torbett, of Dallas; daughter, Tara Donnell Torbett Radekevich and husband, Peter B.; granddaughters, Tiffany Marie and Antonia Suzanne Navarro, both of Austin; and half-sisters, Karen Torbett Pike and husband, William J. and Gail Torbett Moreman and husband, Robert M.
