Biography

Alice was born in Bristol in summer 1862, the first child of John Tovey and Alice Parmiter. The young family entered the hotel business, in early 1863 opening as Tovey's Swan, Commercial And Agricultural Hotel, in Stroud, about 25 miles north of Bristol.[1] Brother Frank was born in autumn 1865, while the family remained in Stroud. Father John was subjected to bankruptcy proceedings in early 1867, revealing that the family had moved to London.

The 1871 UK census found the family of four living at 30 Cropland Road in the London suburb of St. Pancras. Father John worked in sales of iron and tin, his earlier profession being ironmonger.

The 1881 UK census found Alice at age 18 living at 30 Chapel House in south London, working with her mother, listed as teacher of music. Evidently her parents separated, and brother Frank migrated to Canada in 1888. A winter 1889 clipping held Alice a "talented lady... rewarded with a goodly support... when she gave her fifth annual concert at the Peckham Public Hall."[2]

At age 27 in spring 1890, Alice married 34-year-old William Henry Jackson. Mother Alice followed brother Frank to British Columbia only weeks later. The 1891 UK census found the Alice and her new husband living at 112 Cold Harbor Lane in Brixton.

Later that year, the Jacksons also immigrated to Canada, settling in Montreal. Billed under her maiden name, Alice performed concerts.[3] The 1901 Canada census found the couple still in Montreal. They lived at 117 Tupper Street, where husband William worked in insurance for the Guarantee Co. of North America.

Son William Reginald was born in spring 1903. The insurance business took the family to Philadelphia in 1908.[4]

Alice Everus Jackson passed away in autumn 1910.[5]
