Ferdinand / Frederick 27 and his wife Winifred 25 left Ballinakill, Co Galway and emigrated to Australia in 1853 on the Ship 'Telegraph'.[2]
1st Marriage - Winifred SLATTERY in Ireland, where their son John was born. They had three more children in Australia, but two passed away very young, before 1859.
2nd Marriage - Ferdinand was a widower when he married Mary CONWAY / CONROY in Australia 1859. He already had four children, but two had passed away before he married Mary. [3] Ferdinand / Frederick passed away 25th January 1884 in Sandhurst / Bendigo, aged 60. [4] His resting place is at White Hills Cemetery, Bendigo, Vic, Australia. PLOT Mon D2, Grave 9808. [5]
TO CAPTAIN JOHN IRVINE OF THE SHIP TELEGRAPH. Sydney Harbour, September 19, 1853. SIR,- Being now arrived at the end of a remarkably short and prosperous voyage, we, whose names are attached, passengers by the Telegraph, beg leave to record our high opinion of you as a careful and able seaman ; to thank you, your officers and crew, for the kindness we have experienced at your hands; and we feel that owing to your care and unwearied exertions we have, under Providence, been brought to the close of our voyage in safety.
""A DISGRACEFUL SCENE"" Frederick was with a crew digging roads and trenches, when a group of prisoners with instructions of good behaviour or else, turned up to work. A fight broke out and Frederick was knocked over and scored a cut lip.
""THE RECENT DISTURBANCE AT SANDHURST"" The Age (Melbourne, Vic.) 1 September 1874: ""Frederick Tully"", laborer, deposed to going out to Koch's Pioneer Company's ground with the other laborers. Was ordered to cut away tlie dam bank. Was caught by tho shoulders by Lewis and another man, and with them rolled into the creek. Had his lip cut. To Mr. Helm : Did not know where he was going when he started. Was only obeying tlio overseer's orders. Wm. Belan, auother laborer, said be was at the scene of strife, and saw the last witness lying on the ground with the prisoner standing over him with a pick handle, goiug to strike. Tully's lip was bleeding, and Bird's shirt was torn off. At tlii3 timo tho scutlle was so great that witness could seo nothing else. Constable Bradley gave similar evidence, and added that the prisoner was holding the stick as if to strike some one in front of him. [6]
