Biography

Ybeltje Draaisma was born on June 24, 1904 in Leeuwarden, Friesland, Nederland. Her parents were Folkert Draaisma and Martentje Klaas Keuning. ^{[1] [2]}

Ybeltje immigrated to Canada in about 1930.

When Ybeltje was 26 years old she married Jan Schaart on February 22, 1931 at the Christian Reform church in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. ^[3]

Ida Schaart died from after bypass surgery following a pulmonary embolism at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada on August 20, 1974 at the age of 70 years. She was laid to rest at Hazelwood Cemetery in Abbotsford, British Columbia on August 24, 1974. ^[4]

I was able to find the immigration record for Ybeltje Draaisma arriving into Canada on August 23, 1930 aboard the Volendam. She departed Rotterdam and arrived here at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was 26 years old, paid for the trip herself, coming to work as a domestic servant, bound for her friend P. Neelstra? in Vancouver, BC. She lists her father as her contact in Holland. She had .00 on her upon entry. Interestingly she was detained upon arrival, most likley due to sickness or an issue with her documentation (or lack of funds to support herself?). She obviously was not deported as she ended up in British Columbia.
