Biography

Isamu Umeda was born in Fife, Washington on July 17, 1923, the first son and middle child of Japanese immigrants Kumaichi Umeda and Torano Hanamoto. In the 1930 and 1940 United States Censuses, he lived with his parents and siblings in Gardenville, Washington. By 1940, he already identified himself as Sam. During the Pacific War, he was removed to Pinedale Assembly Center and then incarcerated at Tule Lake War Relocation Center with his Japanese American family on July 19, 1942 until September 30, 1943; he was residing in Tacoma, Washington at that time. He was later moved to Heart Mountain War Relocation Center from October 3 until March 28, 1945, when he left with his family for Tacoma, Washington.

Sam married Kazuko Nose in King County, Washington on July 22, 1951. They had three surviving children during their marriage which lasted for the remainder of Sam's 32-year life. He committed suicide through a gunshot in the head at home in Seattle on April 2, 1956. His body was later cremated.
