Biography

Lewis Underdown was born on 22.8.1840 in Northleigh, Devon, England to parents Emanuel and Mary Underdown (nee Elliot). He was their 3rd child and 2nd son. He was baptised in Northleigh on 16.10.1840.

1841 England Census

Lewis is located in the 1841 census at Northleigh, Devon, England. He is newborn and living with his parents and siblings.

1851 England Census

Lewis is in the 1851 census at Pinhoe, Devon, England. The family's surname is recorded as 'Hunderdown' on this census. He is aged 10 and living with his parents and siblings.

1861 England Census

Lewis is located at Bisham, Berkshire in the 1861 England Census. He is unmarried and aged 20, located on the property of Temple House, headed by Owen Williams, a Capain in the Army. The occupation for Lewis is unclear, but he and 3 other young men appear to be working on the property and sleeping in the stables at night.

Marriage

Lewis married Ann Mynards in August 1867 at Holy Trinity Church, Exeter, Devon, England.

Canada

Between 1867 and 1870, Lewis and Ann left England and immigrated to Canada. Exactly when has not been determined.

1871 Canadian Census

Lewis and wife Ann are located in the 1871 Census of Canada at St Roch North, Quebec East, Quebec. They are recorded as aged 30 and Lewis occupation is recorded as “Domestique’’ in French (a farmer). They also have a son George who is aged 9 months.

United States

Between 1871 and 1873, the family then moved again, this time to the New York area of the United States. Their daughter Gertrude was born there on 10th May 1873.

Children

Lewis and Ann had 4 children - George (1870), Gertrude (1873), Mary J (1876), Lewis (1878).

1880 US Census

Lewis and Ann are located in the 1880 United States Federal Census at Ridgeway, Orleans, New York. They are both aged 38 and leiws is recorded as a farmer. Living with them are 4 children – George (age 9 – born Canada), Gertrude (age 8 – born NY, USA) , Mary J (aged 5 – born NY, USA) and Lewis Jnr (age 2 – born NY, USA). Lewis brother Henry and his family live nearby and are recorded on the same census record.

1905 NY State Census

Lewis and his wife are located in the 1905 New York, US, State Census at Ridgeway, Orleans. They are aged 63 and 62 years and Leiws is recorded as a farmer. Although recorded as aliens (as they have not obtained citizenship), they are listed as have been living in the United States for 35 years. This is not correct as in 1870 they were located in Canada. They are living with their daughter Mary (aged 30, US birth), her husband Walter Newman (aged 29, US birth) and granddaughter Ruth (aged 10 months). Their son Lewis Jnr amd his wife live close by and are recorded on the same census form.

Naturalisation

Lewis lodged a petition to become a naturalised US citizen on 26.10.1914. He described himself as 5 foot 7 inches tall, 170 pounds, with blue eyes, white hair and a fair complexion. His petition was denied because it was not attended to until after he died.

Death

Lewis died on 16.5.1917 at Medina, New York, United States, aged 77 years. His wife Ann died on the same day. They were buried together at West Ridgeway Cemetery, Median, Orleans County, New York, USA.
