Biography

OBITUARY: Funeral services for Richard “Dick” Unger, 96 of Giddings, Texas, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner and Rev. Josh Hahn officiating. Burial will follow in the Giddings City Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Giddings American Legion York Post 276. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, November 16, 2022 from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Richard Henry Unger was born on September 20, 1926 in Giddings, Texas to Clemens Henry Unger and Lena Louise (Neumann) Unger. He was baptized on October 24, 1926 by Rev. G.W. Fischer and confirmed on March 29, 1942 by Rev. Max Studtmann at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Dick's favorite scripture verse was John 14:1-6, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me”. Dick served honorably in the United States Army during World War II. After his service in the Army, he worked many years as a farmer and rancher in the Lee County area. On November 24, 1963, he was united in marriage to Alice (Schroeder) Unger at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Three Rivers, Texas. Dick was a member of Lee County Conservation. He also enjoyed working on the farm, taking care of his cattle, boating, tending his fruit trees, playing dominoes, and visiting his family.

He passed away the afternoon of Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Giddings.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Clemens and Lena Unger, and two brothers, Milton Unger and Harry Unger.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Unger of Giddings; two sisters, Ida Meyers of Pasadena and Lydia Siegmund of Giddings, and one nephew, Ray Siegmund of Giddings.

Memorials may be made to Braille Center 163, Mary Martha Ladies Aid at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church Ring the Bell Fund, or to the charity of one’s choice.
