Biography

Mary Dunston (aka Dunstan, Dunstone, etc) was born in about 1835 in Blackwater, St Agnes parish, Cornwall, England to William Dunston and Mary (Truran) Dunston.

In 1841 Mary Dunstan (age 6) lived at Blackwater in St Agnes with her father William (40-44, Miner Copper), mother Mary (40-44), and seven siblings: Ann (15-19, At The Mines), William (15-19, At The Mines), Edward (13, At The Mines), John (11, At The Mines), Elizabeth (8), Thomas (3), and James (8 months).[1]

In 1851 Mary Dunstan (age 16, Work to Mines) lived in Stoke Climsland, Cornwall with her widowed mother Mary (53) and six siblings: Ann (26, Work to Mine), William (24, Miner), John (20, Miner), Thomas (12, Work to Mines), James (10, Work to Mines), and Richard (8, School), as well as two lodgers: Thomas Vincent (21, Miner) and William Pryor (21, Blacksmith).[2]

In 1861 Mary Dunston (age 21 [~26], Domestic Servant) lived at Pyder Street in St Marys, Cornwall with her employer Amelia Harris (29, Farmer Employing 19 Men & 3 Boys) - also in the household were Amelia's five children, a boarder, and one other servant.[3]

Mary married the widower John Newcombe between 1866 and 1870.

Mary and John had three children:

  1. William Thomas Newcombe (1870-)
  2. Polly Newcombe (1873-)
  3. Annie Newcombe (1878-)

In 1871 Mary Newcombe (age 36) lived at Horsebridge in Sydenham Damerel, Devon with her husband John (38, Agricultural Labourer), stepson John J (13, Copper Miner), stepdaughter Elizabeth (10, Scholar), and son William T (0).[4]

In 1881 Mary Newcombe (age 46) lived in Sydenham Damerel with her husband John (48, Smith Labourer in Copper Mine) and three children: William Thomas (10, Scholar), Polly (7, Scholar), and Anne (2).[5][6]

Mary's husband passed away in 1887.

In 1891 Mary Newcombe (age 56, Nurse) was a visitor at Down Gate in Stoke Climsland in the household of her widowed sister Ann Millman (68, Charwoman) - also in the household were Ann's married daughter Pamela Hairs (30, Charwoman) and granddaughter Maud B Hairs (2).[7]

In 1901 Mary Newcombe (age 66, Monthly Nurse) lived in Sydenham Damerel.[8]

In 1911 Mary Newcombe (age 76, Old Age Pensioner) lived in Sydenham Damerel.[9]
