Biography

Mary Ann Green was born in about 1821 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.

Mary Green married Thomas Summerton in 1845. The marriage was registered in West Bromwich, Staffordshire in the last quarter of the year.^[1]

Mary and Thomas had five children:

1. Thomas Summerton (c1846-1912)
2. Mary Ann Hannah (Summerton) Atkinson (1848-1919)
3. Emanuel Summerton (1851-1895)
4. Matilda (Summerton) Hoskin (1855-1942)
5. George Summerton (c1858-)

In 1851 Mary Ann Summerton (age 25) lived at House 2 Lancaster Street in Birmingham with her husband Thomas (23, Millor), son Thomas (5), and daughter Mary (3).^[2]

Mary and her family immigrated to New Zealand in 1859: Thos Summerton (30, Agr Labourer) with his wife Mary (38) and five children - Thomas (12, Farm Labr), Mary (10), Emanuel (7), Matilda (3), and George (1) - sailed from England on 1 Mar 1859 aboard the ship Cameo, and arrived in Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand on 11 Jul 1859 - they traveled via assisted immigration.^[3]

Mary Ann Summerton passed away on 10 May 1892 in New Zealand, aged 71 years.^[4] She is buried at Linwood Cemetery in Linwood, Christchurch, Canterbury.^[5]
