Ann had several children with William Fudge. She was named as Ann Lear on her death certificate.
Ann died of gradual decay on 12th September 1839 in Cock Road, Oldland . Her death was registered by her son in law, James Gage.[2]Her age on her death certificate was given as 92
Research Notes
She may be Joanna Powell who married William Fudge in 1772 [3]. However, the 1774 burial of Joanna Fudge could be Joanna Powell[4]
Ann’s last name at birth may be Lear as several of her children had the middle name Lear.
She does not appear to have been baptised, but she may be the daughter of John Lear and Joanna (Harris) Lear. Joanna's mother, Elizabeth Harris, left a will which mentions her grandaughter, Ann[5]. However, there was another Ann Lear living in Bitton at the time, who married William Lewton on 1 August 1784[6] There was also a Nancy Lear who married Thomas Britton.[7]
It’s possible that her children’s middle name of Lear came from the Fudge side of the family as there is a marriage licence allegation for William Fudge, of Bitton, and Sarah Peacock of Bitton, single woman, (possible parents of her partner) 22 May 1749 [8].William Lear was the bondsman for the marriage licence, but the parish record for this marriage gives the grooms surname as Lear. Possibly the parish record is incorrect or William Fudge May be an illegitimate child or nephew of William Lear[9]
