Biography

Valentine, Richard W. "Dick" age 78, of Edina, passed away suddenly on August 23, 2014. Survived by loving wife of 52 years, Carol; and children, Sara Valentine (David Blythin), Elizabeth Valentine (Mitchell Madson) and Richard Valentine (Ka Valentine); grandchildren, Eve (Jon), Ian, Ashley, Sam, Jack, Nickolas, Bella, Jee Seon and Maddie. Preceded in death by brother, Donn and sister, Jane. Dick grew up in Elgin, Illinois and spent much of his boyhood years making rafts and sailboats along the Fox River. He had a mischievous streak as a teenager and loved being a prankster. He was passionate about automobiles and owned numerous vehicles. Dick served in the US Army, was stationed in Germany and traveled extensively throughout Europe. He attended Michigan State University and Lake Forest College, was married in 1962 and shortly thereafter moved to California to raise his family. He spent many weekends ocean fishing, boating and camping and taking advantage of the beautiful California weather. He traveled extensively as a manufacturer's representative throughout the western states selling art materials and developing products for the picture-framing industry. He happily retired in Minnesota at the age of 55 to pursue numerous interests including woodworking, sewing, upholstery making, silver-smithing, beading and radio-controlled sail boating with a special love for watercolor painting. Memberships included the Inventor's Club, the Entrepreneur's Club, the RC sailboat club, the Minnesota Bead Society and the Minnesota Watercolor Society. He was an avid learner and inspiring teacher to his children and grandchildren. He had a continuous enthusiasm and lifelong passion to expand his knowledge. He traveled down many roads and would often stop to enjoy a beautiful scene and take a photo that he would later paint. He and his wife Carol wintered many years in the warm states, exploring, camping and meeting new friends. He loved sitting on his backyard porch, listening to music and talking with his wife. He had an incredible zest for life, a positive attitude and sense of humor that always drew his family and others to him. He always looked forward to holiday dinners with his entire family and especially enjoyed the 4th of July fireworks. His special day, of course, was Valentine's Day. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Thursday, August 28 at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, West 50th Street and Vernon Avenue at Highway 100. Private interment. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Second Harvest Foodshelf or donor's choice. www.washburn-mcreavy.com Edina Chapel[1]
