JAN van Corsselaer (-after 19 May 1373). "Ioannes…Lotharingiæ, Brabantiæ et Limburgi dux" names "Domini Ioannis de Cosselaer militis nostri fratris naturalis nec non Dominæ Katharinæ ipsius domini Ioannis uxoris" in a charter dated 8 Apr 1345[383]. Heer van Witthem, Wailwilre, Machelen, la Rochette en Colonster.
Mentioned in 1338. [1] In 1344 he bought the castle of Wittem from Gerard of Wittem.[2] Cited as lord of Wittem and counselor of the duchess in 1346, 1348-1350, 1354-1358, 1360, 1361, 1362, 1364, 1369 & 1370.[3] In 1357 he's called lord of Wittem and Wahlwiller.[4]
Mentioned as husband of Amalberga of Duivenvoorde on April 18, 1354 [5]
In 1357 he's called the uncle of Marie of Brabant duchess of Gelre (and again husband of Amamberga) [6] and lord of Wittem and Wahlwijlre. [7]
According to Butkens his first wife was Catharina van Holsiet, and she was the mother of Jan II. However, no Holsiet family exists. In 1387 Jan II is called te nephew of Henrik of Gronsveld together with Henrik of Boutersem. Since Henriks of Boutersem's mother was Catharina van Gronsveld, the aunt of Henrik of Gronsveld, it seems likely that Jan I of Wittems first wife was also an aunt of Henrik II.
