Biography

Garret was born in 1873. He passed away in 1929.

Garret was born in a log cabin near Greenleafton Minnesota to Arend Jan and Berendina Hendrika "Diena" (nee Heusinkveld) Vanderbeek. His parents were both born in the Netherlands and met and married after coming to this country. They were from farm families and continued farming in Minnesota until Garret was 14 when they moved to Pella Community in Nebraska to join other vander Beek families.

Garret had 12 siblings - Dillie "Della", Edward, Johanna (who died at age 1), John, Ella, Gertje, Hannah, Minnie, William Arthur, Henry John, Benjamin Franklin "Frank", and Jacoba "Coba".

February 27, 1907 Garret and Bertha Van Diest were married by Garret's brother-in-law, the Rev. John de Jongh. They settled on a farm near Adams, Nebraska.

According to his registration for the draft for WWI, Garret was of medium height and build, had gray eyes and dark hair.

He and Bertha had three children: Ethel Harriet born 27 May 1911, died 2 Dec 1969; Arthur Cornelius born 5 May 1913, died 16 Nov 2000; and Garret born 4 Apr 1916, died 30 Oct 2004.

In the summer of 1916, Garret suffered a severe heat stroke and was in the State Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska until his death in 1929. Bertha rented out the farm for some time, then when Arthur was 12 years old, they moved back to the farm and he, along with an uncle, did the farming. The farm was eventually purchased by son, Garret, and has remained in the Vanderbeek family since.
