Biography

This profile is part of the Gardner Name Study.

Carey Verney (b. 28 Dec 1626),was the fourth of six daughters of Sir Edmund Verney and his wife Margaret Denton, and sister of Sir Ralph Verney, Bart. of Middle Claydon, Bucks (b. 09 Nov 1613 - d. 24 Sep 1696).[1] [2] [3] [4]

Marriage

Carey married twice, the first of the Verney daughters to marry, despite being the fourth-born. She was aged 15.

Gardiner

Her first husband was Sir Thomas Gardiner (dvp. 17 Jul 1645, bur. 29 Jul Christ Church, Oxford; adm. 23 Dec 1646). He was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Gardiner of Cuddeson, Oxfordshire (b. c. 1591 - d. 1652) and Rebecca Child.[4][5][6] They married on 21 May 1642 either at St. Bartholomew's the Less, Smithfield, [4] or St Bartholomew the Great. [7]

The match was arranged between the fathers, who were at the time both serving the king. But the union was ill-starred. Political differences came between the families. Sir Edmund Verney died at the Battle of Edgehill in 1642 and Thomas Gardiner was killed in July 1645. Cary gave birth to her third child, Margaret, four months after his death, but she was sickly and eventually went blind. The Gardiners "made difficulties" over Cary's jointure, and she removed with her child to her own family's home at Claydon. [8]

Stewkley

Carey remarried as his second wife to John Stewkley of Preshaw in Hampshire but continued to style herself as Lady Gardiner. [4] He died in1684/5 and was buried on 27 February at St James, Paddington. [10] His widow and children then moved to a smaller house, where she feared she would not have the resources to marry her six children, who would have to live like nuns and friars. (Penelope and Catherine were in fact married.) [11]
