Biography

Charles Henry Vince was born in 1886 in Guildford, Surrey. He was the son of John Sargent Knapp Vince and Elizabeth Clarke (Willsmer) Vince. He was christened on 11 Jul 1886 at St Mary's Church in Guildford. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School and went on to study music at Trinity College in London.

By 1911, Charles was a professor of music. His father was a costumier.

Charles served as the organist and choirmaster at St Lukes, Charlotteville, Guildford and at Cranleigh Church, and assisted the organist at Holy Trinity Church in Guildford.

Charles married Mary Weller of Cranleigh in June 1914.

During the First World War, Charles served as a staff sergeant in the No. 1 Line of Communication Supply Company of the Army Service Corps. He was in Mesopotamia by the autumn of 1916. He died in hospital in Basra on 19 Jul 1917, of heatstroke, aged 31. He was buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery. He is also commemorated on the Roll of Glory in Holy Trinity Church, Guildford.
