Biography

Thure von Uexküll studied medicine at the universities of Münich, Innsbruck, Rostock, and Hamburg, 1928-1934, before beginning a career as a doctor. He was denied academic advancement during the Nazi regime, having refused to join the NSDAP, served in the Red Cross working with former concentration camp inmates after the war, and received his habilitation in 1948. He was a private docent at the University of Münich and in 1955 became professor of medicine at the University of Gießen, retiring in 1976.

Von Uexküll is known for his pioneering work in the field of pyschosomatic medicine and for his lifelong development of his father's study of biosemiotics.
