Biography

Mary Ellen Vose was born on 12 Jan 1875 in St Helens, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Thomas Vose and Rebecca (Crooks) Vose. Her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1875, in Prescot district.

Mary Ellen's brother Walter Vose was born in 1878, and was buried on April 21st 1879, aged 11 months.

Mary Ellen's brother Herbert Vose was born in 1880, and died at the age of 3 months; he was buried on August 28th 1880.

By April 3rd 1881, the family were living at 88 Chapel Street, Windle. Thomas was a bookkeeper at the glass works. Thomas and Rebecca had four surviving children - Elizabeth Ann (16), Alfred (9), Winifred (7) and Mary Ellen (6).

Mary Ellen's mother died in 1882, aged 38. She was buried on December 12th 1882 in St Helens Cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann married Thomas Dean on 2 August 1884.

By April 5th 1891, the family was at 25 College Street, Windle. Thomas was working as an office clerk. Alfred (now 20) was working as a general labourer; Mary Ellen (now 16) wasn't in paid employment. Winifred was living in Bridge Street, Windle, where she was working as a domestic servant. A family of five was boarding with the Voses - Peter and Eliza Anders and their three children Thomas, John and Esther.

Mary Ellen married James Webb in 1895 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, St Helens (Anglican).

By March 31st 1901, James and Mary Ellen were living at 6 Hanover Street, Eccleston. James was employed making sheet glass in a glass works. They had two children - Edith (5) and Edwin James (1). Mary Ellen's father was living with them; he died in 1905, aged 62, and was buried on January 10th 1905 in St Helens Cemetery.

By April 2nd 1911, the family were still in St Helens. James was working as a lodge man.

James died in 1942, aged 68. He was buried on March 11th 1942 in St Helens Cemetery.

Mary Ellen died in 1970 in St Helens, aged 95. She was buried on November 17th 1970 with her husband.
