Luke enlisted during the American Civil War, enlisting in Medina, New York on August 21, 1862, mustering in as a Private on August 26, 1862. He served with the New York 17th Light Artillery Independent Battery, mustering out at Richmond, Virginia on June 12, 1865.[citation needed] After the war, he returned to New York, residing in Shelby Township.[3][4][5] By 1875, Luke and his family lived in Ridgeway Township, New York.[6] His wife passed away in 1877; in 1880, Luke lived in Ridgeway Township with his children, working as a carpenter.[7] Luke applied for and was granted his soldier's invalid pension on June 25, 1880.[8]
