Biography

Archibald was born in September of 1840, and was baptised the following month on 18 October in Bothwell in Lanarkshire.[1] He was the youngest son of Archibald Wallace.

His family emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand in 1842 when he was not yet two years old. They sailed on the Duchess of Argyle that left on 9 June 1842.

He married Jessie Thomson in 1864.[2][3] He was about 23 or 24 years old at the time.

The Cambridge Museum states that: "They had a family of seven children – Jessie, Margaret, William, Marion, Agnes, Robert and Archibald and settled in Cambridge about 1870. They farmed ‘Glenside’ at Pukerimu and in 1880 had 175 sheep. In 1888 they sent 40 acres of wheat to Hallys’ Mill. Arch was connected with most of the local bodies at different times. He was a versatile farmer taking on work from threshing to castration."

He remarried, and his wife was Alice Jane Chappell. [4] They were married in 1898 as his former wife Jessie had passed away from tuberculosis in 1880.

The couple retired to a property of six acres in Cambridge. In 1910 he sold his farm in two titles.

He passed away in 1918.[5][6][7][8][9]

In his will he named his son William Thomson Wallace, farmer of Maraetai, and Robert Fisher, farmer of Pukerimu, to be his executors. The first beneficiary named was his wife Alice Jane, who was to have lifetime use of his property at Cambridge (among other provisions). Then his estate was to be divided amongst his children who were named: Jane Agnes Croxford, Margaret Young Bryant, Marion Runciman, William Thomson Wallace, and Archibald David Wallace.

Archibald was buried in the cemetery of St John's Presbyterian, Papatoetoe. The headstone also names his wife, Jessie, also buried there, and daughter Jessie Graham (died 1908) and his later wife Alice Jane (died 1927).

His obituary was published in June, 1918:
We regret to record the death of a very old colonist in the person of Mr Archibald Wallace, which took place at his late residence, Cambridge, on the 12th. inst. He had been in indifferent health for a long time ... Mr Wallace was one of the few remaining passengers in the Duchess of Argyle. He was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1840, and in the year 1842 he arrived with his parents in Auckland. ...
