Biography

George Wallis was born on 21 November 1834 at New Shifford, a hamlet in the parish of Bampton in Oxfordshire. He was the son of William Talbot Wallis and his wife Abigail, the daughter of Peter Williams of Old Shifford. (His birth was recorded by the Baptist Church at Cote in Oxfordshire.) [1] [2] [3]

1841 census: George Wallis was living at New Shifford with 3 younger siblings, apparently in the care of Richard Williams (who was presumably their uncle) and various servants. His age was given as 7, implying a birth date in 1833 or 1834. [4]

1851 census: George Wallis was a pupil at "Downingtown Academy", a small school at Lechlade in Gloucestershire, also attended by his younger brother John. His age was given as 16, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. His birthplace was given as Bampton, Oxfordshire. [5] (The academy was run by Charles Wills, an Independent minister.)

He started farming at Glebe Farm at Hinton Waldrist in Berkshire. [6]

George Wallis (bachelor, of full age), a farmer of the parish of Hinton Waldridge [that is, Hinton Waldrist], son of William Talbot Wallis, farmer; and Julia Octavia Perkins (spinster, of full age), of Birmingham, daughter of Thomas Perkins, brushmaker; were married at the parish church of St Martin in Birmingham on 11 January 1859. The witnesses were called W. Talbot Wallis, Thomas Perkins, John William Wallis, S. H. Green, S. Green, and L. A. Wallis. [2]

In about 1860 he moved to Old Shifford Farm in Oxfordshire. He became well known as a prize-winning breeder of Oxford Down sheep. He was fond of hunting and for many years was churchwarden of Shifford. [6]

1861 census: George Wallis was living at Shifford with his wife Julia Octavia and their children. His age was given as 26, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. His birthplace was given as New Shifford, Oxfordshire. He was a farmer of 400 acres. [3]

1871 census: George was living at Old Farm in Shifford with his wife and their children. His age was given as 36, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. His birthplace was given as New Shifford, Oxfordshire. He was a farmer of 430 acres, employing 10 men, 6 women, and 3 boys. [7]

1881 census: George was living at Old Shifford Farm with his wife and their children. His age was given as 46, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. His birthplace was given as New Shifford, Oxfordshire. He was a farmer of 430 acres, employing 7 men, 4 women, and 4 boys. [8]

Old Shifford Farm was taken in hand by the landlord in 1890. [9] When he left the farm he was appointed Surveyor of Highways for the Witney board. [6]

1891 census: George was living in Aston Road at Bampton in Oxfordshire with his wife and 6 of their children. His age was given as 56, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. His birthplace was given as Shifford, Oxfordshire. He was a farmer and road surveyor. [10]

1901 census: George was living in Bridge Street at Bampton with his wife and their daughter Katherine. His age was given as 66, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. His birthplace was given as New Shifford, Oxfordshire. He was a road surveyor. [11]

1911 census: George was living in the High Street at Bampton with his wife Julia Octavia Wallis and their son George Thomas Wallis. His age was given as 76, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. His birthplace was given as Shifford, Oxfordshire. He was a district surveyor of roads for the county council. It was stated that George and Julia had been married for 52 complete years and had had 15 children together, 3 of whom had died. [12]

George Wallis died at Bampton on 18 February 1916. His funeral was attended by 8 surviving sons and 4 daughters, 2 brothers, 4 nephews and nieces, and some grandchildren. [13] [6] [14]
