Biography

Richard Walters was born in 1855 ^[1] in Hall Green, an area a mile north east of Coseley, Staffordshire England. ^[2] He was the son of James Walters and Harriet Bennett. He was baptised on 28 December 1856 in Coseley in Sedgley, Staffordshire. ^[3]

In 1861 he was living in Hall Green with his parents and 2 younger siblings. His father was a shingler. ^[4]

Richard's father died in 1870. In 1871, Richard was living with his widowed mother and 4 siblings on Yew Tree Lane Sedgley. His mother was a greengrocer. ^[5]

His mother remarried in 1785 ; to John Baker a widower. John and Harriet moved to Warrington Lancashire with their children from their first marriages.

In 1876, Richard married Hannah Baker who was also from Hall Green. She was the daughter of his father's new wife. The couple married in Warrington.^[6] They had at least 10 children.

In 1881 Richard was an iron shingler living at 198, Liverpool Road, Warrington, Lancashire with his wife and a daughter. ^[2]

In 1891 he was living with his wife and 5 children, still on Liverpool Road. ^[7]

His wife died in 1894. In 1899 Richard remarried; in Warrington, to Clara Etty Morris. ^[8] Clara was over 20 years younger than him.

In 1901 Richard and Clara were living together in Evelyn Street Warrington with two of his children. ^[9]

By 1911, Clara and Richard appear to have separated. In 1911 Richard was recorded as being at boarder with two of his sons at the home of John and Eliza Baker in Samuel Street. The Bakers were his brother- and sister-in-law from his first marriage. ^[10] His wife was living in Bostock Street.
