John was described as a tall man, of medium build, with brown hair and grey eyes. He did not enlist, and continued to live and work in Williamsport.[5]

His marriage ended in divorce, and John moved to Ohio, residing in 1930 in Toledo, Ohio, rooming that year with Milton and Gertrude Swan while working at an automobile factory as a machinist.[6] John remarried, marrying Lucille May (Anderson) Walton in Highland Park, Michigan on January 21, 1933[citation needed] taking up residence together in Toledo.[7]
