Aunty Daphne recalls John was a champion swimmer, and was always at the Domain Baths in Sydney. It was believed that he died from something that he picked up in the water? But he died in Armidale and not Sydney.

The Armidale Chronicle, Wed 7 Apr 1909: Obituary. A particularly sad death was recorded locally on Saturday morning when John the only son of Mr and Mrs John Waterfall, of Armidale, succumbed to enteric fever after a fortnight's illness. Much sympathy has been expressed for the afflicted relatives in their trouble. The deceased was 19 years of age and was a very industrious youth. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended, the Ven. Archdeacon Lewis reading the burial service in the Anglican Cemetery.
