Biography

Richard was born about 1501, the son of John Waterhouse and Agnes Rishworth. His birth date is estimated from parents' marriage shown as 1494 and the estimated birth of his brother Robert 1507.[1]

He married Isabel Saville, daughter of Nicholas Saville of New Hall.[2] She died in 1549 and was buried on 21 December 1549 at Halifax "Isabell uxor Richardi Wat'house de Warley"[3]

Richard died in 1559 and was buried on 3 September 1559 at Halifax, "Richardus Wat'house de Warley".[4]

Research Notes

There is a will of a Richard Waterhouse dated a week before his burial, but is said to be of Skircote rather than Warley, "Watterhouse, Richard, senr., Skercote, par. Hallyfax". Will dated 27 August 1559, proved 3 December 1560.[5] Richard of Skircoat is said to be the father of Robert Waterhouse of Priestley[6] so the families appear to be different, but further research needed.

Parentage and birth date - needs connection to parents who are pre 1500. Source, FMG as attached - note, the only children shown there for John Waterhouse and Agnes Rishworth are Richard and Robert. Margaret, Sybil, and John, attached as children at the moment, belong to John Waterhouse who died 1534 and left a will naming them, proved 23 September 1534 by Henry Batte husband of Sybil named as son in law in will.[7] (the footnote appears to have the sons in law the wrong way round; the will does not say which daughter is married to which). Agnes Rishworth was married to the John Waterhouse who died 27 January 1539/1540 and was buried at Halifax 28 January 1539/1540. They had a brass monument in the church naming Agnes and showing John's date of death as 27 January 1539. This has been mistakenly transcribed as 1530 because it was done from an incomplete brass rubbing which missed the "IX" off the next line. See note 2, page 49, in The monumental and other inscriptions in Halifax parish church by Crossley, E. W.[8]

Agnes's birth date has been estimated from daughter Margaret who does not belong to her. So when they are sorted out, Richard's birth date will probably also be pre 1500 - his father was born 1443 not 1470, and he has grandchildren born about 1530 if not earlier.
