Biography

Mary was born about 1654, estimated from family and marriage. She was the daughter of Jonas Waterhouse, Vicar of Bradford, Yorkshire.

She married Nathaniel Webster on 30 September 1673 at Otley, Yorkshire. Her parish is given as Bradford.[1] They had children Anne, Susannah, and Thomas, but Nathaniel died in 1678 and was buried on 28 December 1678 at Bradford.[2] The well-known preacher Oliver Heywood, in his Nonconformist Register, says "Nathl Webster that married Mary Mr Waterhouse dr. got the foul disease they say at London in Oct, died Dec. 28, buried at Bradford".[3]

Mary remarried about 1680 and had further children Charles and James Greenwood who are mentioned in the will of Mary's sister Dorothy in 1696.[4] Charles was described as "an infirm child" and Mary's other children were mentioned as "her son Thomas Webster now living in Cambridge and his brother James Greenwood now living with my father in Bradford ... Anna Underwood [formerly Webster] my niece now living in Dublin". Mary was "my sister Mary Greenwood now living with mee in Chester ... my deare and only sister".

Research Notes

No marriage found for Mary Webster and John Greenwood, but the children of "Mr John Greenwood of Bradford" fit with the family wills and the burials of Frances and Henry as children of "Mrs Mary Greenwood widow". Mary is mentioned in the will of her sister Dorothy as Mary Greenwood.

John Greenwood may be the "John Greenwood of Leeds" of the Greenwood of Stapleton family who is said by Dugdale to have married Anne, daughter of Jonas Waterhouse Vicar of Bradford. No daughter Anne found at the moment. Mary is well sourced from three different family wills, and there are no Greenwood children other than hers mentioned in the wills.[5]
