Biography

Isaac was born in 1881 in Mount Barker, South Australia, the son of William Waters and his wife Elizabeth, nee Daw.[1]

Isaac was a labourer and was employed on a permanent way gang with the South Australian Railways. In 1916 he was working on the Murraylands lines.[2]

In 1917 he applied to become an Australian War Worker under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme to supply labourers and navvys for War work in the UK. At the time he was single and was working on the permanent way at Wynarka, South Australia where he had been employed for the previous 2 years. He was living at Wynarka.

He was accepted and his agreement was signed at on 07 May 1917. He was issued with Australian War Worker Badge No. 767 and embarked on the SS "Clan MacGillivray" from Fremantle, Western Australia on 22 May 1917, arriving at Plymouth, England on 27 Jul 1917.

Isaac commenced work as a navvy with H.M Road Board, Sedgeford Aerodrome, Norfolk on 01 Aug 1917. By May 1918 he was working at a different aerodrome at Middle Wallop in Hampshire and by the start of Oct 1918 he had been transferred to H.M. Dockyard at Rosyth, Inverkeithing in Scotland. He was off work with influenza during Oct and Dec 1918.

Isaac returned to Australia on the SS "Barambah", departing from the Royal Albert Docks in London on 23 Dec 1918. His agreement was terminated as complete on 22 Feb 1919 after disembarking in Adelaide.

He married Gladys Gordon Henley in Adelaide, S.A. in 1925. There were no children.

They lived at Strathalbyn and later at Milang in South Australia.

Gladys died at Strathalbyn, S.A. in 1952.[3]

Isaac died in Norwood, South Australia in 1958.
