David Watkins was born in Cwmclys, Llanwnog to Jeremiah and Hannah Watkin. Jeremiah was a weaver by trade. David was baptised on the 22nd of March, 1824.

On the census of 1841 he was living at Pant y gessell, Llanwnog, a residence that belonged to the Hughes family. David is a farm servant on the 1851 census, living at Dolgwyn felin, Dwyriew, Newton (for the Williams family).

On the 20th of March 1852 David married Elizabeth Owens, daughter of Price Owen of Garned wen, Manafon.

In 1861 the census shows that David had returned with his young family to Cwmclyst, making his children at least the fourth generation to have lived in the house. At this time the children included Ann, Jeremiah and David. David Snr. was a labourer.

The family moved and by 1871 were living at Esgirddu, Dolgynfelin. Additional children included Evan, John and Elizabeth, the last two having their births recorded at Llanllugan. David has by now become a gamekeeper in Elizabeth`s home parish.

Another move, this time to a house next door to Esgairddu, to Penyffrydd in Manafon, which is recorded in the census of 1881. Here David`s occupation is listed as farmer, and this, along with abode, remain the same for the census of 1891.

David was living at Penyffrydd when he died in 1892. He was buried at Llanllugan on the 11th of May, 1892. His wife Elizabeth continued to live there and appears on the next two successive censuses, occupying herself with dairy work.
