Biography

He was the son of Samuel Steel, Cooper.

In 1840 he married Emma Steel. She was a minor. Her residence was Old Charge. Her father was Robert Steele, engineer. His trade was recorded as Cooper on his marriage certificate, and residence as Old Charge. Witnesses were Eliza Stut? And John Ickson?

After marriage, resided at Hackney Crossroads, Middlesex, London.

They had children:

Thomas Isaac (1841-1898 Tasmania)
Emma Eliza (1846) m Henry Samuel Rundle
Sarah (1848)
Elizabeth (1850) d. Infancy
Frederick (1852) m Ellen Hills

In London, Isaac is believed to have been chief master at Glenwright's Brewery, London.

In 1852 he was living at 5 Grove Passage, Hackney. He applied for six pounds to emigrate to Western Australia. At the time, he and Emily had four children: Thomas Isaac (11), Emma Eliza (7), Sarah (4), Frederick (8 months)

Migrated to Australia sailing from London aboard the "Monteagle" which arrived in Melbourne on 12th April, 1853. During the voyage, the "Monteagle" was in a collision with another ship which resulted in some person(s) having to be rescued from the sea. Isaac was involved in the rescue, for which deed he is believed to have been awarded the ALBERT MEDAL. One of his grandsons was named Albert Edward Webb probably to commemorate the award.

The Webbs then moved to Tasmania, and settled at Longford.

They had further children:

Anne Eliza (1855-1860) died young
Samuel Robert (1857)
Harry George Bright (1859)
Florence (1862) m Charles Jowett

At Longford, Isaac was the Head Brewer at Noake's Brewery, Littleton Street (est. 1857). He established his own brewery in Punt Road, Longford, between the Prince of Wales Hotel and King's Bridge (Punt Road is now part of Union St). Isaac later sold his premises to Cook & Cowburn who operated it as a cordial factory. [1]

The Webbs moved to Launceston and lived in Frederick Street, where Isaac died.

Isaac is believed to be buried at Cypress St Church of England cemetery, Launceston. The cemetery was converted to Broadland House College Sports OVal in 1953 when all traces of graves and headstones were lost.
