John was born in 1794, the son of John Weems, Jr and Sarah Jones. He became a Methodist preacher in 1828 when he was admitted to Houston Methodist Conference.
John married Martha Gass in 1830 in Greene County, Tennessee. They were parents of two children:
Martha died about 1835. Shortly after her death, while visiting at the home of David Munsey in Russell County Virginia, “a haven for itinerant Methodist preachers”, he met and married David’s daughter, Rhoda Munsey.
He and Rhoda returned to Greene County, Tennessee where they had four children:
In 1843, John died in Cumberland County, Kentucky while the family was enroute from Greene County, Tennessee to southwest Missouri to join John’s older brother, Jones Weems. Rhoda continued on to Newton County, Missouri where she married widower Ezekiel Carter.
John’s burial place is unknown.
John Weems had one female slave between the ages of 20-23 listed on the 1840 census.
