Biography

Edward was born in 1868 in Lurgan, Co. Armagh, Ireland.

He came to Brisbane, QLD on the "Duke of Sutherland" in about 1887 with a brother and sister. He worked briefly as a tailor in Roma, QLD before settling in Ipswich, QLD where he married Elizabeth Montgomery in 1898. He worked briefly in other QLD towns including Townsville and Mount Morgan.[1]

He applied on 12 Jun 1917 to become an Australian War Worker for work in the UK as a labourer or navvy during WW1. He was a Presbyterian, married with 4 children and was living in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia at the time and was working as a labourer for Harper & Cribb of Ispwich as a labourer. He claimed to be 45, which was probably the maximum age they were accepting. He was accepted and his agreement was signed on 03 Jul 1917. He was issued with Australian War Worker Badge No. 1261 and embarked from Sydney on the SS "Medic" on 01 Aug 1918 for Liverpool, England, disembarking there on 12 Oct 1917.

He commenced work as a labourer at RNAS Sleaford on 16 Oct 1917, but was transferred to Holloway Bros on 29 Jan 1918. By Oct 1918 he was ill and medical reports were that he should be repatriated to Australia due to age and cardiac debility. He had been dismissed from work as too weak for the work and suffering poor memory. His doctor recorded his age as 53.

He embarked from Plymouth, England on the SS "Marathon" on 20 Oct 1918 (sailed 07 Nov 1918) for return to Australia. His agreement was terminated on 03 Jan 1919 on arrival in Australia due to ill health.

He died in Brisbane in 1929.
