John Weir was born on 1 October 1820 in Dunoon, Argyll and baptised on 15 October 1820 in Dunoon and Kilmun, Argyll, son of John Weir and Janet (Russel) Weir. ^[1]

He married Margaret Whitelaw on 18 June 1847 in Greenock, Renfrewshire. He was a blacksmith living in Greenock. ^[2] They had 10 children.

May have died in 1885 in Greenock East. Death in Scotland's People death index but age at death given as 52 when should be around 65. ^[10]
