Biography

Arthur Wells was born in 1841 and christened on 27 Jun 1841 at St Marys, Handsworth, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of John Wells and Phoebe Clemson.^[1][2]

In the 1841 census, Arthur was age 0 living at Handsworth, Staffordshire with his father John Wells (30), mother Phoebe Wells (25), brothers Thomas Wells (5), Samuel Wells (4).^[3]

In the 1851 census, Arthur was age 9 living at Ninevah Lane, Handsworth, Staffordshire with his mother Phoebe Wells (37), brothers Thomas Wells (15), Samuel Wells (13), Edwin Wells (6), sisters Carrie Wells (4), Mary A Wells (3), Alice Wells (0). Occupation: Works Steel Button Factory.^[4]

In the 1861 census, Arthur was age 19 living at Ninevah Lane, Handsworth, Staffordshire with his brother Edwin Wells (17). Occupation: Furnace Man.^[5]

Arthur Wells married Ann White in 1863 at West Bromwich, Staffordshire.^[6] They had six known children: Arthur John Wells (b. 1865), Clara Wells (b. 1866), Edwin Wells (b. 1867), Henry Wells (b. 1868), Mary Ann Wells (b. 1870), Emma J Wells (b. 1874).

In the 1871 census, Arthur was age 28 living at Duddeston & Nechells, Aston, Warwickshire with his wife Ann Wells (31), sons Arthur John Wells (6), Edwin Wells (4), Henry Wells (3), daughters Clara Wells (5), Mary Ann Wells (1), niece Sarah Ann White (13).^[7]
