Biography

Blake Hovenden West b. 11 Jan 1932, Bushnell, McDonough Co., Illinois. m. 2 April 1954, Richmond, Ft. Bend Co., Texas, Katherine Ann Satterwhite b. 10 July 1933, he is the son of William West and Maude Alexander.

Blake was born January 11,1932 in the upstairs bedroom of his grandparent’s home in Bushnell, Illinois to Maude Phinney Alexander and William West.

Blake attended secondary schools in both Illinois and Arizona. A graduate of Kemper Military Institute in Boonsville, Missouri, he was captain of the golf team and was named all-conference.

After Kemper, he graduated from the University of Houston where he met his wife, Katherine Satterwhite and was active in ROTC and a member of the U of H golf team. They married in 1954 in Richmond, Texas. Both Katherine and Blake began their coaching careers in Katy, Texas. After their oldest daughter was born, the family returned to Illinois where Blake worked alongside his grandfather in banking and farming. Blake’s grandparent’s Nancy and Blake Alexander were very influential in Blake’s life. An avid outdoorsman, Blake learned to golf, fish, and hunt from his grandfather; pursuits which he taught his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Blake’s banking career took off at Farmer’s and Merchant’s State Bank in Bushnell and was followed by appointments in both New Mexico and Texas.

Blake was preceded in death by his parents, Maude Vance and William West.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Katherine Satterwhite West of Georgetown, TX; his children: Nancy West of Georgetown, TX, Jeana (Matthew) Kawamura of Newport Beach, CA, Krisann West of Rockland, ME, and Blake A. (Marsha) West of Colorado Springs, CO; his grandchildren: Katie Murphy, Christopher (Kristie) Murphy, Laura (Craig) Famoso, Paul (Lisa) Kawamura, Carrie (Adam) Stalnaker, and Kiley West; his great grandchildren: Chase and Colby Johnson, Micheal Murphy, Madison, Taylor, and Brooklyn Famoso, and Brooks Kawamura; his brother, George (Chein) Vance of Bushnell, Ill and two nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown, Texas or the OARS Foundation www.oarf.org which works with first responders and past and present military personnel to promote physical, mental and social wellbeing through outdoor adventures and community outreach activities.

The service for Blake West will be held on Tuesday, at 11:00 AM at Grace Episcopal Church.
