Robert Wetherell was born in the village of Toft Hill, Durham, in 1852 and was the son of William Wetherell and Sarah Hodgson.[1]
On the 1861 census, Robert, aged 8 years, is living at Toft Hill House with his parents and siblings: William (18 years), Thomas (16 years), Ann (15 years), Jane (13 years), Bryan (10 years), John (6 years), George (4 years) and Sarah (2 years).[2]
On the 1871 census, Robert, aged 18 years, is living at Toft Hill House with his parents and siblings: William (28 years), Jane (23 years), Bryan (20 years), John (16 years), George (14 years), Sarah (12 years) and Barbara (9 years). His father, William, is a farmer of 169 acres and Robert is working as a farm labourer.[3]
Robert married Anna Maria Clark in the summer of 1875 and they had seven children.[4]
On the 1881 census, Robert, a labourer, and Anna Maria are living in Byers Green with their sons: William (5 years), Robert (2 years) and George (1 month). They also have a boarder, Joseph Firman, living with them.[5]
On the 1891 census, Robert, a labourer, and Anna Maria are living in Byers Green with their children: William (15 years), Robert (12 years), George (10 years), Bryan (7 years), Mary Ann ( 5 years) and Hodgson (8 months). Joseph Firman is still boarding with them along with John Martin.[6]
On the 1901 census, Robert, a labourer, and Anna Maria are living on High St, Byers Green, with their children: George (20 years), Mary Ann (15 years), Hodgson (10 years) and Ethel (8 years). George is working in the mines like his father. John Martin is also still boarding with them.[7]
