Robert Wetherell was born in County Durham, England.

Robert Wetherell was born in the village of Toft Hill, Durham, in 1852 and was the son of William Wetherell and Sarah Hodgson.^[1]

On the 1861 census, Robert, aged 8 years, is living at Toft Hill House with his parents and siblings: William (18 years), Thomas (16 years), Ann (15 years), Jane (13 years), Bryan (10 years), John (6 years), George (4 years) and Sarah (2 years).^[2]

On the 1871 census, Robert, aged 18 years, is living at Toft Hill House with his parents and siblings: William (28 years), Jane (23 years), Bryan (20 years), John (16 years), George (14 years), Sarah (12 years) and Barbara (9 years). His father, William, is a farmer of 169 acres and Robert is working as a farm labourer.^[3]
